JOSEPH BUCKLIN, 1st, of Rehoboth, Pawtucket, Rhode Island
Generation No. 1 of William Bucklin’s Descendants
1. SR. JOSEPH2 BUCKLIN, 1ST (WILLIAM1) was born 23 Jun 1633 in England1,2, and died 26 Mar 1718 in Rehoboth, MA3,4. He married DEBORA ALLEN 05 Nov 1659 in Rehoboth, MA5,6,7,8, daughter of JOHN ALLEN and CHRISTIAN BACON. She was born Abt. 1639 in Springfield, MA9,10, and died 01 Apr 1720 in Rehoboth, MA11.
Joseph’s father William Bucklin lived to at least the age of 79; Joseph 1st was 84 years old at his death; his son Joseph 2d lived 66 years; his son Joseph 3rd lived 80 years, his son Joseph 4th lived 70 years; and Joseph 3rd’s brother David lived 94 years. These were remarkable lengths of life for those times, and suggest that the Bucklin line was both of a hardy constitution and also of sufficient wealth to keep good health.
By marrying Debora Allen, Joseph 1st started the Bucklin gene pool off strongly, for Debora parents both lived more than 84 years.
From a document executed by Joseph in regards to his father’s estate, it is evident that Joseph was a farmer. It appears that his homestead was in that part of Rehoboth that later became part of Pawtucket, RI.
On June 1658, Joseph received one share of 50 acres in the Rehoboth North Purchase. (The town of Attleboro was formed from the Rehoboth North Purchase in 1694.)
In 1670, Joseph was chosen to serve on a grand jury.
On 5 Feb 1671, Joseph drew lot # 63 in another drawing of lots of land.
In 1688, he again participated in a division of land of the Rehoboth North Purchase.
Joseph and his brother Benjamin both married women from the Allen family.
Joseph, Benjamin and their father participated in the drawing of lots for the division of the land in the North Purchase; and John Allen Senior and Junior also participated in that division of land.
Bristol County, MA, probate records show that Joseph was many times called upon to help settle the estates of other people.
The graves of Joseph and also of Lt. Peter Hunt, with whom Wm. Bucklin did carpenter work on the church, are in the south part of Pawtucket (now Rumford) RI. The church, known as Newman Church, is across the junction of highways from the cemetery of the burials of many Bucklins.
In 1659, Joseph announced his plans to marry Deborah Allen. With this, Joseph’s father, William Bucklin, deeded the northern third of his 600 acres to Joseph. William formally contracted with the Allen family to “build the said Joseph a Convenient house for his Comfortable living with three score Acres of land ajoyning to it”. [Mayflower Descendant, XVI, 82] . The house was built at approximately what in 1999 is the location of Royal Square at the intersection of Central Avenue, Cottage Street and Sabin Street of Pawtucket, Rhode Island.
In 1664, William deeded the central third of his 600 acres to his other son, Benjamin. Benjamin built his house at what in 1999 is known as the corner of Walcott Street and the junction of North and South Bend streets.
After the granting of the two thirds of his land to his son’s, Willliam’s will provided that upon his and his wife’s death, William’s own southern third was to be equally divided between the two sons. However, Benjamin was killed in the Nine Men’s Misery of 1676. Thus, when William Bucklin died in 1683 and his wife in 1687 — William’s third of his original 600 acres was inherited totally by his only living son, Joseph. Thus at the death of William, both the northern third and southern third of William’s 600 acres belonged to Joseph.
The Bucklin 600 acres ran for about two miles of river front, from about the Pawtucket Falls on the North to a large point known as Bucklin Island on the South. This was a considerable amount of land and visible to travelers. “The Bucklins were, from early times, noted for being great land-owners, from Bucklin Island downward [sic].” History of the State of Rhode Island (1875).

Notes for Joseph’s Wife Debora Allen
Debora’s grandfather George Allen was born about 1582 in England, Although he came to the New World with his son John with the Puritans of the Plymouth Colony, his pastor called him “an Anabaptist and a Familist”. George Allen moved, with his son John Allen, to Sandwich, Barnstable, MA, and lived there from 1637 until he died in late Apr 1648, Sandwich, Barnstable, MA, Age: 66
Because of places and dates of births and marriages, it appears that George Allen and his son John Allen, with John’s young family came to the New World together. This strongly suggests that Debora was raised as a Baptist and a reason why the Allens left Plymouth to first Sandwich, and then to Rehoboth.
Debora’s brother Isaac was born about 1650 in Rehoboth, so it would appear that the John Allen family left Sandwich for Rehoboth by that time.
Different sources state England and Massachusetts as the birthplace for Debora. We use the “Springfield, MA” place of birth because that is what is in the death record for her, but in 1690 the survivors may not have really known where she was born.

Joseph Bucklin (Jr) is found on the 7 Feb 1689 list of proprietors of Rehoboth.
With his brother in law Hugh Cole, he is found many times in the Bristol County, Mass., probate records, as assisting in the settlement of someone else’s estate.
Many probate records mention him as a yeoman of Rehoboth.
His date of marriage to Mehitable Sabin is also given as 30 Jul 1691.
His will shows him as a Yeoman, and mentions that he had lands in Rehoboth, Attleboro, and Pawtucket Falls. His wife Mehitable was the executrix.
The gravestone in Newman Cemetery reads: Here lies ye Body of Joseph Bucklen, Decd July ye 28th 1729 Aged 66.”

Headstone in Newman Cemetery is among Carpenter graves, rather than among Bucklin graves, and reads: “Here lies ye Body of Barah Bucklen, Decd Feby 7th, 1738/9 in ye 73rd year of his Age.”
Query whether this is the same Barak Bucklin shown in the records of the Patriots and Founders roll which is the alternative source shown on Barak’s death.
There are a number of Barak Bucklins born in about the same time and about the same place. Several are reported to have been buried in Newman Cemetery in Pawtucket, RI. There is confusion among the reporters caused by this number of Baraks. Hopefully, someone will take the time to investigate the cemetery stones and help to eliminate confusion. Nehemiah,1 (53) died in 1677 in the month before his brother John died. Three years later his parents [Joseph (23) and Debora] had another child which they named Nehemiah, 2 (54). The second child Nehemiah, 2 (54) died in 1705. The same year (1705) that the second child Nehemiah (54) died, three months later Nehemiah’s (54) brother Joseph (31) had a child which he named Nehemiah (63). this Nehemiah also had a son named Nehemiah.
The 1790 U.S. Census shows for Rehoboth a Nehemiah 1st as head of a household of 2 males over the age of 16, 2 males under the age of 16 and 2 females; and also shows a Nehemiah 2nd as head of a household of 1 male over the age of 16, 5 males under the age of 16 and 4 females. At this time in December,2000, I cannot match these records up with any of our Nehemiahs of Rehoboth.
The 1790 US Census shows 592 males over the age of 16, of which 27 were Bucklins. The town had a total population of 2352, including 48 slaves. The town population of Bucklins was 84.
