Documents Events Report

Kristen Ingram graciously agreed that if The Joseph Bucklin Society would provide her with the documents and citations relevant to the life of William Bucklin, she would create and donate to the Society a short readable biography of William. When donating the story to the Society, Ingram also provided this page of Documented Events to show which of those documents and citations she had used as sources for her story.

Appointed 1: 03 Jun 1656, Rehoboth, MA – Grand Juryman. John C. Erhardt, Rehoboth, Plymouth Colony 1645-1692, 89.

Appointed 2: 03 Jun 1657, Rehoboth, MA – Constable. John C. Erhardt, Rehoboth, Plymouth Colony 1645-1692, 92.

Appointed 3: 30 Jan 1658/59, Rehoboth, MA – Newman Church. John C. Erhardt, Rehoboth, Plymouth Colony 1645-1692, 106, “enlarge the meeting-house the breadth of three seats throughout, to find boards and to finish it complete and answerable to the rest, with seats, the town finding nails.” In 1670 Lt. Hunt and others (not including William) added the gallery to the church.

Appointed 4: 09 Dec 1659, Rehoboth, MA – Shingle Newman Church. John C. Erhardt, Rehoboth, Plymouth Colony 1645-1692, 102,

“It was agreed upon that the town of Rehoboth and Lieutenant Hunt and William Bucklin that the said Lieutenant Hunt and William Bucklin is to shingle the new end of the meeting-house, and to be done as sufficiently as the new end of Goodman Payne’s house; and they are to furnish nails, and to be done my May-day next ensuing, provided that the frame be ready in season; in consideration whereof they are to have L8 to be paid in good, merchantable wampum, when their work is done.”

Born: Abt. 1606, Clyst St. George, Dorset, England. Clyst St. George, Devon County, England, Birth records, Note: the only reasons we connect “our” William Buckland with this date is that this is the only surviving record in South West England of a William Buckland / Bucklin / Buckliner / Bucklen/ Bucklens / Buckler born about a date which fits with William’s reported age at his death. The place of birth is “somewhat a fit”. That is to say Clyst St. George is about 100 miles from Radipole, which is the place of some of William’s father’s family at that time.

Boundary Negotiations Bucklin North Boundary: Record 1: 18 Apr 1666, Rehoboth, MA – Fence Erected. John C. Erhardt, Rehoboth, Plymouth Colony 1645-1692, 176, Disputes about the exact line of the North Purchase and Bucklin’s land lead to a committee chosen to decide and “there shall be a three railed fence set up and maintained, between the late purchased land on the north side of the towne, ..from Goodman Buckland’s lands to the Mill river….”

Boundary Negotiations Bucklin South Boundary: Mary Bosworth Clarke, Bosworth Genealogy, (Cossitype, San Francisco 1926), p 58,

“October ye 22d 1680 Land was laid out to William Bucklen, and a Comitte was Impowered by the Town to agree with Buicklens Respectting a highway to the Sal water for the Cattle to go to Drink. [copied ffrom Proprietors of Rehoboth–Meetings, at Taunton.].

Burial: 01 Sep 1683, Rehoboth, MA. Rehoboth Vital Records Deaths, Book I, page 56, “buried the 1st of September, 1683” , but no record of the place of burial. [Cf., the records of Plymouth Colony mistakenly give the year as 1679, because of apparent mistakes in copying when the Rehoboth records were copied and sent to the Plymouth clerk. Christening: 23 Nov 1606, Branscombe, Devon, England. “Family Group Records,” LDS Ancestral File, For ANF; 8HDB-NC in LDS ancestral File, QUAY 1. Note: no source is given for this fact in this LDS submission, but it does match with the little birth information that we guess belongs with William. That is to say, Branscombe is the main church for the Clyst St. George group of vilages (see note on “birth,” above).

Died: Abt. 01 Sep 1683, Rehoboth, MA. James Savage, Genealogical Dictionary, The First Settlers of New England, (Little Brown, Boston, 1862), The date of death chosen by Savage is 1679, which is the date of burial recorded in the Rehoboth Vital Record Death Book. This date is however in error, as explained in the Bosworth Genealogy.

Freeman Status: 22 Feb 1657/58, Freeman of Rehoboth. John C. Erhardt, Rehoboth, Plymouth Colony 1645-1692, 94, “accepted as freemen of the town…William Buckland.”

Gravestone: Rehoboth, MA. Mary Bosworth Clarke, Bosworth Genealogy, (Cossitype, 16 Beale St., San Francisco, CA, 1926). says there was one but it has not been found in the year 2001.

Highway Record : 22 Oct 1680, Rehoboth, MA – Highway right of way. John C. Erhardt, Rehoboth, Plymouth Colony 1645-1692, 416, Bucklin’s land boundaries and that of the original Newman group was still in dispute . On this date a committee of six distinguished men were appointed to personally do the survey . At the same time this committee was given power to
agree with the Bucklins for a highway to be used by the cattle of the rest of the town residents to go down to the salt river area.

Probate: 1684, Plymouth, MA. Plymouth Colony Records, Vol 6, Court Orders, p 18 or p 145-146, Bond of 100 pounds given by Joseph Bucklin to administer estate of William Buckland, of Rehoboth, late deceased, given 28th of Oct 1684.

Land Obtained 1: 1635, Hingham, MA. George Lincoln, History of Hingham (1893)(Published by the town):

“Wm. Buckland had land granted to him as follows: 4 acres …Wearyall Hill; a house lot of 5 acres near present …West Hingham; 2 acres at Great Plain; 2 acres at Layford… Meadow; and 3/4 acres of salt meadow at Cohasset. He also owned 1 lot at Broad Cove.”

Land Obtained 2: about 1643, Rehoboth, MA. The land of William referred to in the following two items, below, was immediately north of the original 1643 purchase of the Rev. Newman’s congregation, when they they moved from Weymouth MA to Rehoboth. William’s purchase most likely was before the arrival of Rev. Newman’s congregation, because from the start of Rehoboth there was discussion on exactly where was the boundary between the Newman group and Bucklin’s land; Bucklin was recognized as having a prior right to the land which blocked the Newman group from immediate and easy access to the Seconk River, and that Bucklin had the right to the land at the falls.

“At the same time the way to William Bocklands house is agreed on by those partyes which it doth conform.”

Old Proprietary Records of Rehoboth, 1656, at 81 show that at the town meeting Bucklin formally recorded his land as being:

“600 acres of land wch John Hasels wch I bought of Edward Smith bounded on Pawtucket River on the west & unto a Run yours truly, somes from the cedar swamp on the east upon the south with lands yours truly, was John Reads and upon the north the common as we go to Mr. Blaxtons.”

Land Obtained 5: 22 Jun 1658, Rehoboth, MA. Leonard Bliss, Jr, History of Rehoboth, (Otis, Broaders & Company, 1836), 6-7, June 22d, 1658. At a town meeting lawfully warned, lots were drawn for the meadows that lie on the north side of the town, in order as followeth….46. Will. Bucklin….”

Land Obtained 6: 26 May 1668, Attleboro, MA. Attleboro Town Records.  John C. Erhardt, Rehoboth, Plymouth Colony 1645-1692, 198, William drew lot 58; his son Joseph participated and drew lot 74; and William’s son Benjamin drew lot 17.

Land Obtained 7: 20 Feb 1671/72, Rehoboth, MA. John C. Erhardt, Rehoboth, Plymouth Colony 1645-1692, 258, “lots for the Second devision”. William had lot 20; Joseph 9; Benjamin 45.

Land Obtained 8: 10 Mar 1673/74, Rehoboth, MA. John C. Erhardt, Rehoboth, Plymouth Colony 1645-1692, 282-284, The common lands of Rehoboth were leased out to various persons, including the Bucklins.  William and Joseph and Benjamin were paying substantial amounts for the fencing of the lands of which they had the lease use.  The number of
rods (feet) of fencing they were to provide indicates they were the largest landowners or husbandmen involved in the Commons.

Land Obtained 9: 09 Apr 1680, Rehoboth, MA. John C. Erhardt, Rehoboth, Plymouth Colony 1645-1692, 432, Again, William and his son Joseph participate in the lots drawn for the division of new lands.
