The Gaspee Raiders: Rhode Island men who attacked the Gaspee.

Gaspee raiders can be divided into catagories

For ease in discussing individual persons in the attacking group of over 100 American men, you might want to consider the following sub groups of persons, such as the following..

  • Attack leader John Brown, prominent merchant of Providence, who planned and organized the raid, then went along to direct it.

  • The ship captains who were the boat captains of the boats rowed to attack the Gaspee. There were eight boats from Providence plus one boat that rowed all the way from Bristol, plus one boat from neighboring Warren.

  • Joseph Bucklin. Joseph Bucklin is the person from whom this society is named.  He fired the shot that struck and wounded the English captain, and changed the character of the raid to a clear case of treason and armed revolt from English law.

  • Ephraim Bowen, and John Mawney.   Ephirm Bowen gave the only clear and comprehensive written account of the events of the raid itself. John Mawney wrote another account, which is the main American source from which we can learn what happened in the English ship's cabin when Mawney and Joseph Bucklin treated the English captain for his wound.

  • Arron Briggs, a slave who Col. Potter impressed to row his boat.

  • The other Rhode Island men in the attacking force. We have identified more than have previously been mentioned by historians.

Our list of the Gaspee Raiders includes biographical information on the individuals in the Gaspee raiding party.  It is on a separate web site of ours which contains the biographical information on these men and discussions of inter-relations among them. To see the full list of all the known men in the longboats attacking the English Navy ship, with links to separate pages discussing each of those men, go to our List of probable raiders in the attacking boats
